JNE Automation, in conjunction with Rockwell Automation and Gerrie Electric, has been awarded contracts for the Dofasco #1 Caster Control System Automation Upgrade Project and the Dofasco KOBM Controls/Drives Automation Upgrade Project.

The Caster project consists of implementing a new ControlLogix platform across a number of existing PLCs, as well as replacing the existing DCS. JNE Automation’s scope consists of the design and supply of the new panel inserts housing the new ControlLogix equipment and the design of the software for the DCS replacement. In addition to this, JNE Automation is also responsible for the required construction engineering and contractor coordination to install the new equipment.

The KOBM project consists of implementing a new ControlLogix platform across portions of the existing Control System, replacement of the existing DCS system and also replacing a portion of the existing drive systems. JNE Automation’s scope consists of the design and supply of the new ControlLogix PLC panel inserts and to design the software for the DCS replacement.

Rockwell is providing all the control system equipment, technical support, all PLC program conversion and is the Project Manager for the project.

These two (2) project’s new Control Systems will be installed in parallel with the existing systems to insure the converted software operates in the same manner as the existing program. This “Shadowing” will take place over a period of time at which point the new ControlLogix platform will take control of the process and the existing control systems will be turned off. This approach will greatly reduce the risks associated with implementing a new system, thus reducing unscheduled downtime.

The Caster Project was completed by mid 2006 as scheduled, with the KOBM complete early 2007.
