Granulator Premix System

The Premix control system is comprised of several components. The system supports the automated production of the premix, the transfer of the premix to granulator and the control of common equipment. The control system uses an Allen-Bradley SLC 505 as the main control platform along with Allen-Bradley 1746-I/O modules for interconnecting the discrete and analog I/O points to the Granulator control system. The controller also connects to Allen Bradley Drives for pumps, agitators, scrapper controls and two Mettler Toledo Jag Extreme Weight Transmitters for feed/weight measurement of the two premix tanks. Intouch Version 7.1 from Wonderware is used as the HMI that interacts with the Control processor and provides the graphical interface panel to the operator.

An Ethernet is used between the controller and the HMI while remote I/O communication is implemented between the drives and weighs scales to the controller.

The software for the premix system implements the ISA-SP88 definition only on the physical model. The operator action replaces the procedural control by performing all batching activities manually.

JNE Automation was responsible for:

  • System architecture
  • Network configuration
  • HMI design and programming
  • PLC programming
  • System commissioning

JNE Automation also provided continued support and upgrades to the system. Recent upgrades included the addition of an automatic defrost cycle.
